I was in Kerala, one of my favorite states in India again last month, visiting three properties of Relais and Châteaux http://www.relaischateaux.com/en(the global association of small luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants).
These properties took me through the beach, backwaters and Kochi… I am writing separately about all that I did and saw on this packed trip… But all three properties had special elements of décor and architecture that combined contemporary sleekness and minimalism with South Indian heritage that truly appealed to my inner artist.
Have a look at the first property in this series which took us to the backwaters:
Purity on Lake Vembanad
The boutique property Purity, on the gargantuan Lake Vembanad used to be an Italian guest house and designer- turned hotelier Joerg Drechsel and his pretty Basque wife Txuku have converted it into a vibrant haven.
A colour scheme that is bold and beautiful and uses purple and pink accents.
Multi-hued tiles that double up as carpets ( so practical and beautiful)
Leather puppets sandwiched behind sheets of glass lit up.
Modular blocks of furniture designed by Joerg that remind me of LEGO blocks!
Antiques dotted around the hotel ranging from a palanquin to a statue of the super-god Hanuman.
Themed Art /artifacts
Soak your troubles away in the ‘larger than life bathrooms’
“I discovered windows one afternoon and after that, nothing was ever the same.”
Quirky ideas like this hand cart with spices
Stone pillars that lead to the backwaters
And the views of the backwaters framed like an Impressionist painting
Overlooking Lake Vembanad at its widest point, Purity is 70 km from Cochin International Airport.
Accessible by car & boat.
